AR (Accelerated Reader)

What is AR?

Nixon students in first through sixth grades participate in the Accelerated Reading (AR) program. First grade starts later in the school year.  AR is a computer program that helps teachers manage and monitor children's independent reading practice. Students take an AR STAR Test three times per year, which determines their ZPD level.  Goals are set based on the results of the STAR Test. Students choose books to read within their ZPD level range. Students then take quizzes on the books they have read. Quizzes can only be taken at school.  The highest score gives the student the maximum number of points towards his/her goal. Each student should aim for 100% of his/her goal. Each goal is determined based on the STAR Test. Each goal is individualized for each student.
